The March 2010 edition of soccer referee instructional articles is now available. This month we are including articles for the intercollegiate referee, the interscholastic referee and in Nuts and Bolts articles that address those basic techniques, procedures, practice alternatives, and skills that are often forgotten or overlooked while going through the experiences of soccer refereeing.

Intercollegiate Referees

This tenth issue of our monthly NISOA column presents two additional continuing education articles intended to help our NISOA Intercollegiate Referee members develop the skills, information and techniques needed to improve their refereeing for the nation’s Intercollegiate soccer game.

All articles are authored by Intercollegiate Soccer Referee-oriented colleagues from around the country who share their experience and expertise in this specialized skill. The aim of NISOA is to create a continually growing base of personal development resources to help all Intercollegiate Soccer Referees reach the level of personal excellence they have set for themselves.

Our authors this month are:

1. Mike Oliver, NISOA National Referee, Illinois, whose article: “The Moment of Truth” addresses a key competency that every Intercollegiate Referee needs to develop to its fullest potential to help assure success in this chosen avocation. Practical suggestions for recognizing, reacting to, and managing such key game incidents abound in this article.

2. Rodney Kenney, NISOA National Assessor, Florida, whose article: “Consistency” addresses an oft-criticized aspect of Referee performance expectation, and offers suggestions to the Intercollegiate Referee on how to strengthen the skill.

Interscholastic Referees

This eleventh issue of our monthly column, containing two new articles, is designed to serve as an expanding reference resource of continuing education materials to help the Interscholastic Soccer Referee improve field performance and development as qualified high school officials. Articles are authored by Interscholastic Soccer Referees and selected writers who have experience in high school officiating, instruction, assessment, and administration.

This month’s authors include:

1. George-Frantz Louis, NISOA National Assessor, North Carolina and Arkansas, whose article: “The Referees of Modern Soccer” reviews the newer skills and competencies that today’s Referees have developed to meet the challenges of the modern game of school soccer.

2. Bob Sumpter, NISOA, Florida, whose article: “Fitness and Positioning” stresses the link between those two competencies required for success in the Interscholastic game, and suggests how to pursue that goal.
