Bill Maxwell

William “Bill” Maxwell of Livonia, NY and native of Glasgow, Scotland passed away on November 15, 2017 at age 87. Bill became a member of NISOA in 1974 and refereed actively until 1995. After his retirement from the field, he acted as a valued mentor and assessor, and as an observer for ECAC. Bill had a storied career as a referee in the North American Soccer League, including acting as center referee for the 1984 Soccer Bowl. He was one of the first full-time referees hired by the Major Indoor Soccer League, refereeing the MISL championship game in 1981.

Bill was masterful with player management, and had a wit that was unrivaled. According to his son Ray, some of Bill’s favorite college memories came from his annual trip with a number of colleagues to Oneonta’s Hartwick College for the Mayor’s Cup.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on December 15, 2017 at Central Presbyterian Church in Geneseo, NY.

Special thanks to the Dave Wolgast and the Rochester (NY) ISOA chapter for this information.
