Mental and physical preparation are essential in all college soccer matches but championship matches in front of a national (and sometimes international) audience challenge the referee team to be at their very best. In this case, a critical match incident occurs in the 84th minute of a scoreless game. The referee in this match is Tori Penso, 2018 NISOA Referee of the Week (Week 2).

Does the referee remain centered and focused during the incident?
- Yes, we conclude this due to the correct discrimination of the careless foul.
Is the referee in a good position to make the correct decision?
- Yes, reading the game means understanding where to be in the next phase of play.
- Tori does an excellent job reading the counterattack and long ball into the attacking third.
- You will notice that her explosiveness and acceleration gave her an excellent angle to make the correct decision.
- Tori's positioning is off the traditional diagonal, closer to the penalty area line that runs parallel to her Assistant Referee, so she is able to accurately determine the location of the foul.
- She has the optimal angle to see the challenge and close proximity to sell her decision.
- There is no dissent or disagreement by Georgetown regarding the referee's decision.
Body Language and Gestures
Does the referee's body language show signs of confidence or good concentration?
- Notice the referee sees the incident and with confident body language indicates that a foul occurs inside the penalty area.
Do the referees react slowly after an incident?
- The reaction from the referee was immediate and decisive which really sells the decision.
Courage
Does the referee have the courage to make a game critical decision late in the match?
- Yes, with the score tied at 0-0 with 5:35 left remaining in National Semifinal, she does not hesitate awarding a penalty kick.

Once the referee whistled to stop play for the foul, the AR gave the referee immediate feedback by running to the corner flag indicating that foul was inside the penalty area. The referees worked well as a team. This must have been discussed in their pregame.
Absolutely a penalty, I would have also cautioned as she was clearly beaten to the ball and had a full arm extension push after the initial contact foul.
