The May 2010 edition of soccer referee instructional articles is now available. This month we are including articles for the intercollegiate referee, the interscholastic referee and in Nuts and Bolts articles that address those basic techniques, procedures, practice alternatives, and skills that are often forgotten or overlooked while going through the experiences of soccer refereeing.

Intercollegiate Referees

This twelfth issue of our monthly NISOA column presents two additional continuing education articles intended to help our NISOA Intercollegiate Referee members develop the skills, information and techniques needed to improve their refereeing for the nation’s Intercollegiate soccer game.

All articles are authored by Intercollegiate Soccer Referee-oriented colleagues from around the country who share their experience and expertise in this specialized skill. The aim of NISOA is to create a continually growing base of personal development resources to help all Intercollegiate Soccer Referees reach the level of personal excellence they have set for themselves.

Our authors this month are:

1. John Van deVaarst, NISOA National Clinician, whose article “Management Styles” that discusses how a well-thought out game plan for the Referee can be successfully carried out by choosing and using the best combination of people-management skills suited to the needs of the assigned game.

2. NISOA, in the form of its policy on: “NISOA Intercollegiate Uniform Dress Code” which reminds NISOA Referees of the importance of dress in meeting professional behavior, performance, and appearance expectations in our assigned games.

Interscholastic Referees

This thirteenth issue of our monthly column contains two articles designed to serve as part of the expanding reference resource of continuing education materials to help the Interscholastic Soccer Referee improve field performance and development as a qualified NISOA Interscholastic Official. All articles are authored by Interscholastic Soccer Referees and selected writers who have experience in high school officiating, instruction, assessment, and administration.

This month’s authors include:

1. Mark Koski from the NFHS, describing the 2010 NFHS soccer rules changes.

2. Gary Huber, NISOA Director of Assessment, Missouri, whose article: “Personal Fitness, Position, and Game Control” describes these essential traits and skills from an assessor’s perspective.
